High School Memories: Poetry Day 13

First, let me apologize for not posting yesterday. Instead of writing I chose to watch Howl. In it I learned that Allen Ginsburg didn’t always know the meaning of what he was writing until years after publication. The meaning was there all along but he didn’t know it all the time. Anyway, if you haven’t seen Howl, you need to.

Back to my experiment.

“Write about someone you remember from high school. Keep yourself out of it except as an observer of that person’s experience. (Read Thom Gunn, “The Butcher’s Son.”)”

-Kim Addonizio, “Ordinary Genius”

James Cech

Great god

Holy vision of greatness

Owner of the world

Pray for a moment

That he bends

To touch

you, lowly mortal

God on stage

off stage

The whole world’s his stage?

Bring him gifts

Beg him smile

for a minute

unto you
