Supersize Me: Day 6

BREAKFAST

I had to cheat again today. I was supposed to have a bagel with cream cheese again but I still don’t have cream cheese. So I substituted it with jelly again. I also had a glass of milk to help wash the whole thing down, which was on the menu.

LUNCH

I had another delicious roast beef sandwich, including cheese and steak sauce. It was like heaven. Oh and an accompanying handful of pretzels. It was an amazing lunch.

DINNER

Finally, a dinner that was remotely dinner like. I had nachos! Of course, this was the one night I was working and only had a fifteen minute break to eat. I couldn’t finish them all but my tummy was still happy.

11:40

This wasn’t even cheating; I straight up broke the rules and I don’t feel one iota of guilt. You see, tomorrow I am getting my wisdom teeth out at 8:20am. This will be my last solid food for a week. I was not about to eat a piece of fruit for my last supper. I had a glazed doughnut instead.

 

CONCLUSION

Well, this experiment wasn’t as exciting or extreme as I thought it would be. My friend started a medication just before she did her food diary. This medication made her not as hungry, so I think I actually consumed more calories than she did before the swap. That being said I still learned from this experience.

I was reminded of the importance of carbs. I was heavier in high school because pasta was my go to food but after college I stopped eating a lot of pasta and so I was only eating bread on my sandwiches and maybe a piece of bread at dinner.

I also learned that fruit is sweet. I was eating a lot of sugar to fill me up, instead of real food before this diet swap. Instead of dessert, I can eat fruit, which is what I did when I studied abroad in Spain. By replacing cookies and candy with fruit, my body will be less likely to crash from the sugar high and will be better balanced.

Well, that’s all folks. If someone with a more extreme diet would like to swap with me, let me know. I’d love to suffer what the other side eats.

Supersize Me: Day 5

BREAKFAST

Today’s breakfast was juice and cereal. I don’t usually drink juice for breakfast and when I do drink juice I water it down. Watering down your juice is a really healthy choice because you’re not consuming as much sugar. However, my friend does not water down her juice and so I choked down really thick orange juice.

LUNCH

Finally, I get a lunch that’s truly a lunch. It was just a sandwich and an apple but that’s so much better than, say, a small bowl of fruit. That being said, I didn’t get an afternoon snack like she has a lot of the time.

Anyway, my sandwich was delicious. I took a piece of the roast from my family’s Christmas dinner, melted some cheese on top and poured a bit of steak sauce on top of it all.

DINNER

This is not a dinner! I am eating a granola bar, a cheese stick and a pear. That’s merely three snacks put together. This isn’t going to stick for very long.

11PM

That explains why I’m eating an entire can of ravioli for a midnight snack. I strongly dislike canned ravioli, really ravioli in general, but today it tasted wonderful. I ate most of the bowl easily and only struggled with the last few bites.

Supersize Me: Day 4

I slept terribly last night. I went to be around 12:45am and woke up at 3:30am with a terrible stomach ache. I felt so sick that I considered ending this experiment. There’s no way that this is doing any good for my body. Although, it is reminding me of foods I can eat that will fill me up.

Today my friend starts eating my diet. She’s going to be as miserable as I am.

BREAKFAST

Finally, a change. I had a bagel with jelly. I was supposed to have it with cream cheese but I don’t have any at my house and I don’t think my family would eat the rest of it, so it would just be a waste. I know jelly and cream cheese aren’t equivalent but I figure it’s close enough.

LUNCH

A small bowl of fruit. That is not lunch. That was barely satisfying.

3PM

I am so hungry. I took a nap after lunch and dreamed that I broke the diet and just started eating and eating and eating. I’m starting to see how my friend can eat two corn dogs in one sitting. I could eat just about anything right now. Except ramen noodles.

I just ate the most delicious BLT sandwich, which was accompanied by a cheese stick. I probably could have eaten two because it had been so long since I’d had a complete meal. One lesson learned, do not go long periods without eating because you’ll probably end up eating more than you really need.

DINNER

Leftovers, which in my case was pizza. I ate two slices, although I was on the fence about whether I could eat a third. My stomach was still recovering from not eating a proper lunch, I think.

11PM

One orange. Finally, a midnight snack that is more snack-like and less meal-like. This was the perfect thing to eat before bed.

Supersize Me: Day 3

BREAKFAST

Yea, more cereal! Actually, I normally eat cereal for breakfast, but I also normally have a snack between breakfast and lunch because cereal doesn’t stick.

ONE HOUR LATER

I’m hungry.

LUNCH (1PM)

I don’t like soup. I can’t stand the broth. I’ve never had ramen noodles because they smell disgusting when cooking. Well, today I’m going to break that trend; I get to eat an entire package of ramen noodles and an orange.

I was right to not eat ramen. I don’t understand why my sister loves it so much. The noodles were okay but when I went to have some of the broth, I thought I would gag. It was disgusting and so salty, too. I managed to eat all the noodles from the package but I didn’t finish the broth. Needless to say, the orange was a wonderful relief afterwards.

DINNER

Finally, I get to eat something I like, Subway! My friend didn’t specify what kind of sandwich, just that she had a six inch, so I ate a Philly Cheese Steak with provolone cheese on flat-bread. It was wonderful and easily went down. I deserved it after the lunch I had to eat.

11:30PM

Another food that I really like is cheese and crackers. This was another delicious snack, but I think this might be a factor into my friend’s weight issues. This is a lot of food to eat before bed and you’re really not supposed to eat before bed anyway. Although, she probably stays up much later than I do, which is why she has need for a midnight snack.

Supersize Me: Day 2

Due to confusion and family stress on both ends, I ended up skipping a day between Day 1 and Day 2. That’s alright, my stomach needed the break.

BREAKFAST

Cereal again. It’s what I usually eat for breakfast anyway. The only problem is that it doesn’t stick with me for very long, so I get hungry a couple hours later and lunch seems so far away. Not to mention….

LUNCH

Nothing. I’m so hungry!

2 PM

A bowl of mac’n’cheese. I used a packet of instant mac’n’cheese and it was so unsatisfying. I don’t eat much at meals but I like to have a couple different things and a bowl of macaroni does not cut it. Actually, the taste was so bland that I added some shredded Colby Jack and it was one hundred times better, not to mention richer.

DINNER

I’m hungry again and all she ate was an apple and peanut butter. It was actually a delicious combination. Surprisingly, I’ve never had apples with peanut butter. And despite not feeling full right after eating, that meal stuck with me for most of the night.

11PM

I think it’s the late night snacks that are going to get me. I don’t like going to bed feeling super full. I sort of cheated on this one, though. All my friend told me was to eat a bowl of spaghetti. Since I was at Applebee’s I ordered their three cheese chicken penne. I managed to eat all but a small corner of the dish, which was probably a larger size than the one my friend ate. Oh but I felt so full after. I may never eat that meal again.

Supersize Me: Day 1

This experiment came from the television show Supersize Vs. Superskinny, which aired in Britain for quite a while. The show follows one obese person and one underweight person through a five day diet swap. The best part of the show is that it also examines diet fads and health problems caused by overeating and under-eating. In case you haven’t seen it, here’s a clip.

Anyway, I’m addicted to this show and thought it would be fun to try a diet swap myself. I am borderline underweight and I’m constantly fighting to make sure I stay at the right weight. I finally found someone on the heavier side willing to attempt a diet swap with me. Today we begin.

BREAKFAST

It is almost an hour after eating breakfast and I still feel gross. I had a full bowl of cereal with milk. Usually I eat half a bowl of cereal without milk. All I can say is breakfast was unsatisfying. There are all these goodies from Christmas dinner (rolls for one) and I can’t eat them. Plus, I have to go until lunch without snacking. Hopefully breakfast was big enough that I can make it.

LUNCH

How does she go all morning without a snack? I’m so hungry! Maybe breakfast for her is later than when I eat it. Anyway, I’m hungry but I’m not hungry enough to eat what is on the menu. Two corn dogs and a handful of fries. That’s a lot of food. Also, have you ever looked at the ingredients in a corn dog? I’m hopefully never eating one again. I should never have looked at the ingredients but I had to make sure the brand I bought didn’t have whey in it or else my mom would get sick.

I do not like the taste of corn dogs. Even smothered in ketchup, I do not like the taste of corn dogs. I ate the two corn dogs really fast so that my stomach wouldn’t have time to feel full before I finished. I slowed down for the fries because I like fries; they’re so yummy.

Anyway, I now feel really full. All I can think about is how full my tummy is. I feel like the Grinch except it was my stomach that grew instead of my heart, or like Pooh Bear when he gets stuck in Rabbit’s hole after eating too much.

DINNER

I’m not hungry. I don’t think I’ll be hungry for a week after the lunch I had. Oh well, one sandwich and a banana coming right up. I really wish I didn’t have to.

10:30pm

I’m still full and I still have to have a midnight snack. How am I going to survive an entire week of this?

MIDNIGHT

Ok, I cheated a little this time. I was supposed to eat an apple and some crackers. I ate a dinner roll instead of the crackers because I needed to eat something comforting. And finally I had a meal I enjoyed. It was light and felt healthy.

Now that I’m done eating, I’m so full I think I’m going to puke. I feel so terrible. I don’t think my stomach has finished digesting lunch. What did I get myself into?
